Indiana Farmer Embraces Solar Energy, Sparking Local Debate and Economic Promise

Norm Welker's shift from corn to solar panels not only challenges traditional farming norms but could economically revitalize his community with the expansive Mammoth Solar project
In the cornfields of Indiana, farmer Norm Welker made a choice that stirred the pot in his close-knit, rural community. Norm decided to farm the sun, instead of corn. He believes solar energy will allow his daughters to keep the family farm and his community will reap tax benefits in the long-term. Some neighbors think his land should be for traditional farming.
“It blows my mind! It’s my farm. Why do I need my neighbor’s permission to do this?” Norm said.

To Norm, using land for solar power is just a new, more efficient way to farm. A lot of corn is used for fuel, not food, and some land is already kept empty to help corn prices.
The farm land has also been degraded by decades of pesticides and synthetic fertilizers. With solar farms, wild grasses and plants are flourishing under solar panels, which attracts bugs and pollinators.
Once complete, the 13,000 acre Mammoth Solar project will power over 200,000 homes across several Indiana counties. This is an area that has previously been dependent on coal.

Norm will lease his land for solar at $1,000 an acre per year for the next thirty years, significantly boosting his income.
A county official said the Mammoth Solar project's $1.5 million yearly payments could lower taxes for landowners. To appease the folks against the solar project, the county board agreed to rules for trees hiding panels, less noise, and big open buffer zones, covering only 20% of the area with panels.
“I’m gonna retire, I’m gonna restore habitats – it’s likely there’ll never be a cornfield here ever again,” Norm said.
