We’re exploring a reader’s question today: How are those turbines and blades being recycled? This is what we learned.
Turbines harness the wind to make energy, but eventually wear out and need replacing. About 90% of a wind turbine is easily recyclable, like the steel tower, for example. But what about the blades made from materials like fiberglass and epoxy resins? These are the same tough materials used in airplane parts, cars, and bikes. Because parts like these are made from composite materials, traditional recycling is a unique challenge. But we discovered some surprising solutions.
